Re: Boat Building in Annapolis

Do you have a good full time job in the Annapolis area? If you do forget about building a boat. If you can work online or are semi-retired I would not build the boat there. Here in NE FL rents are low, paid help if you want it is cheap, and there are several sources for discount/ salvage materials.

I have worked and sailed out of Annapolis a bunch and would NOT build a large boat there.

My 2 cents from someone that is actually DOING IT.

Re: Boat Building in Annapolis

Will stand by for the solar cat thread. 1 man can build a 38' cat in 2-3 years working full time. I am about 16 months (give or take) in FYI on my boat of full time work.

No, don't have a Job in Annapolis, ,as I said, I am a sailor (for work too, not just pleasure) so I spend 3 months on the ship and have 3 months leave after.... so lots of time to work (at least when off the ship...)

Hiya RW! Look at Beneteau's - Oceanis 41 design. The stern has a great platform that can be raised/lowered for "water expeditions"; Marine Biologists, SCUBA divers, snorkelers and oceanographers, to just name a few. Provisioning your boat from your dinghy, through this platform, is a breeze. I suggest that you incorporate this feature in your design. If I was in the market for a cruiser, I would definitely have this design feature built in.

Re: Boat Building in Annapolis

I live in Annapolis and would recommend against building anywhere near here. It is simply way too expensive.

Have you concidered buying a salvage or "Distressed" boat and simply gutting it and build to your needs? Go to any boat yard and look for expired registrations or ask if you see a project boat that someone has given up on.
