We are on a Jeanneau 44i that draws 6'8". We are currently in the Miami area and looking to head to Bimini on Tuesday. We would prefer to go further south into the Keys to gain an edge on the Gulf Stream but having trouble locating a good anchorage in the Keys where we can leave from that can handle our draft. Any suggestions would be welcome.
Any anchorages like Rodriguez Key will be open to easterly winds but is doable for you in fair conditions. No need to really go farther south. From Key Biscayne to Bimini is an easy and popular run. The current in the Stream is strongest in the middle so it will not have a big affect on your crossing but you will have to do some adjusting. It will not slow your progress a great deal. Chuck
