Zeus 3 screen very hot

Hi all

I just ordered a Zeus 3 at the show. Afterwards I was playing with the demo unit and noticed it was really hot. All the others were the same. Slightly uncomfortable to hold your hand on but not so hot you couldn't leave it there.

The B&G guy said it's because of the way it's mounted and it only draws 2amps max.

Is this a problem ?

Hot means if nothing else power consumption, other than that have to assume it is within its tolerance, however I know people that fly with IPads and they have a tendency to overheat and shutdown if they are left in the sun

Re: Zeus 3 screen very hot

On our Simrad I turn the screen brightness to 9 in daylight. Still easily visible, but runs cooler.

Re: Zeus 3 screen very hot

Thanks

They said it works up to 55°C, it felt like it was at least that hot but I could be way off. Your right, they would have had the brightness turned right up for the show.

Just having an ...... Oh crap I spent too much money panic attack :-)

With a little wind on the screen and the humid air to dissipate the heat, it gets even better.

We have had ours for a couple of months. It gets so hot we can barely touch it. It also starts running very slow and becomes unresponsive after a few hours. Have to turn off the power and restart it. Not good.

We bought a Zeus3 9 in 2020 and have had lots of overheating issues. The unit gets so hot you can’t touch the screen and then it stops working. You have to cycle the power to the unit to reboot it. Very dissatisfied with it and do not recommend it. I was told to lower the brightness but then we can’t see the screen in the sun.

We have a Zeus3 9" as well. Ours was fine in the higher latitudes, but we're now in Mexico, where the ambient temp causes the Zeus to get so hot it would shutdown. We'd have to wait for it to cool and then power back up.

I spoke with a local tech who confirmed these do run hot. He recommended we add some way to circulate air in the space behind the unit.

I drilled a hole high up on the backside of our binnacle and added a 2" 12V fan that exhausts air, and is wired to the chartplotter power circuit so it runs when there is power available to the Zeus. There was another existing hole lower on the binnacle to allow for air to be drawn in.

We haven't been out to confirm if this is enough, but I'm hopeful. We also are conscious about keeping direct sunlight off when possible.

Is there a heatsink on the back? I’m surprised to hear of this...marine electronics should be designed for these environments.
