Wonky alternators

I have been having a fit debugging intermittent tachs on both VD MD2030 motors.
The W post on the alternators sure enough goes to zero ac volts when the tachs go weird.
Weird means here a zero reading or some short lived mid rpm reading. V belts are not loose. B+ still at 14.4vdc when tachs die.

The W signal is fed from one phase of the stator. Not much to go wrong. But it occurs to me that fully charged start batteries can shut down all field current ? Do others have tach/alternator issues similar to mine?
