Winlink question

I am running Winlink, winmor, saildock, RMS exspress and what ever other names are thrown in there. LOL! When I select a freq it shows "center freq" lets say 7096.50 and dial freq 7095.0. Are both used as in duplx or just one as in simplex? Also what mode, LSB or FSK? I have tried all the combos and have not connected. My SignaLink is doing it thing and transmitting. I am in a populated area but I get the 10000 sound pulse and the 6501 and 8764 CC weather clear.

Use USB mode and it will connect. Make sure there are no audio filters. The dial frequency is where the carrier signal was. The center frequency is 1.5 kHz above the dial frequency which indicates USB. The actual Winnor tones are centered around the center frequency.

QRZ.com shows KN6EMI to be a technician license.

There are only a few RMS stations in the 28.0 to 28.3 MHz technician HF data band.

As Bill noted you need a US General class license or equivalent elsewhere to get much out of Winlink.

The listed center frequency is the middle of two tones based on the historical use of FSK for data. The dial frequency has a built in 1500 Hz offset to account for the common (today) use of upper sideband (USB). If you're old like me you'll remember the description AFSK for the same offset. Pactor III is mostly DQPSK so there are phase differences as well as frequency (it's a time-frequency matrix) but the principle applies. WINMOR also uses multiple carriers (frequencies) and phases. Everything is simplex.

Vocabulary is important. Winlink is a service. You don't run it, you connect to it using a protocal like Pactor or WINMOR (or ARDOP). Saildocs is a service you connect to through Winlink that you can also reach through the Internet. It is provided as a public service by Sailmail. Winlink Express (used to be called RMS Express) is client software that runs on your computer to connect to Winlink through your radio using WINMOR or Pactor or whatever.

I have found enuff gateways open to teck to pull gribs with, but there should be more. I didn't have time to get my Gen before setting off to Hawaii from Georgia. Maybe alone the way I will find a place to upgrade. Old Hamsters need to help out new Hamsters to keep this stuff alive and well. Winlink is great stuff for sailors and much much more. Anyway, up and running and a big thank you to all the guys that make Winlink work!
