wi-fi range extender

I just got a G-sky MW usb wi-fi adapter for my laptop with comes with a 5db, sma type connector, antenna. I plan to use a remote higher gain ant connected to the G-sky with coax.
Questions;
What model omni directional ant have you had success with?
What is a good height for the antenna?
Length of the coax between ant and adapter? and usb cable between adapter and computer? (The adapter does not have to be in the cabin.) Special quality cables?
How about a source of software that gives you a continuous, real time indication of signal strength as opposed to what I now have that requires you to refresh to see any change?
thanks
Bob
BTW- I'm undecided about the G-sky, Yesterday it more than doubled the reception over the built in the laptop but this morning its been flaky, it was cheap--$35.

Try to find this

This one I found at a Dutch store WifiStick - www.2com.nl - Wifi Thuis En Onderweg!
But I bet you can find it somewhere else to.
It has 5 m. usb cable included with it and is waterproof.

20 db for a omnidirectional? Wow, that's impressive. I normally see then in 12db range.
