Which VHF

I'm torn between these two handhelds:
Cobra MR HH500FLTBT
ICom 1C-M36

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

The IC-M36 is a good unit and good value.

However, even better -- much better though a bit more money -- is the new Standard Horizon HX-870. It's waterproof, floats, has a built in GPS & DSC capability, a great readout, and is an improvement over their heralded HX-851.

It can be had for less than $220 street price. At that price, it's a steal!

Re: Which VHF

Another vote for Standard Horizon. Aside from the fact that the HX-870 is a good unit, SH in general just makes great radios. Have been putting them on boats for 40 years and never had one fail. Have a SH handheld that is 30 years old and good as new. Have their cheapest dash model I put on my 19' runabout that is over 20 years old, been out in the weather and rain many times and also good as new.

SH also has the clearest and loudest speakers. Even when my hearing was better I appreciated the sound quality in a power boat with noisy engines or sailboats on a windy day.

Re: Which VHF

My handhelds are a Standard Horizon and an icom. I prefer my standard horizon to my icom, but I would definitely take the icom over the cobra.
