Re: VHS/AIS Limited Range

Thanks, but forgive my ignorance please. What’s a SWR meter?

It's a Standing Wave Ratio meter. It puts a signal on your antenna system and basically measures how much of your signal is lost by measuring how much signal is reflected back due to impedance mismatch. If your coax or antenna has gone bad the impedance will have changed causing more signal to be reflected back. You can Google it and find any number of articles on how they work. Many, if not most licensed HAMs own one and will know how to use it. Perhaps you could find a local HAM and ask if they could give you a hand. They often know a lot about antenna systems.

Re: VHS/AIS Limited Range

While an SWR meter can help determine if a line is cut or antenna is damaged by showing high SWR, It can also lie.. I have a coax cable with no antenna that will show a 1:1 SWR... Will no transmit or hear a lick... Its soaked in water and makes a nice dummyload for testing..

Well you do need to know how to use a SWR meter for it to be an effective diagnostic tool. Incorrect use does not mean the tool is lying.

In your instance you would use the SWR meter to determine the loss in the coax and the power available at the antenna but I expect you know this .
