Vesper XB8000 Raymarine Integration

Hi All,

I am finishing up some winter projects and I have come across a problem that I don’t fully understand and was hoping someone could point me in the right direction.

My boat has an older Raymarine ST60, RL70C Combo with Wind, Speed, Ap on A SeaTalk Network. I also have a Raymarine E85001 interface box inline between everything else on the SeaTalk network and the RL70C which displays all info on the network (wind, speed, etc)

This winter I installed an XB 8000 and tapped the NMEA 0183 input into the output side of the Raymarine E850001 interface box. I powered everything up and it all appears to be working. However when I connected my IPad with INavX I am only getting NMEA sentence strings for the AIS. I also tried IRegatta and had the same results. Does anyone have any suggestions for how I should troubleshoot next. From everything I read the E85001 should be outputting everything from the SeaTalk network to Nmea and the xb8000 should be then outputting that to wifi.

Thanks

Have you tried swapping the wires to/from the XB 8000 (should be green and white)? Not everyone agrees on + and - terminology.

Re: Vesper XB8000 Raymarine Integration

Look at the instructions under "Power and Data". You will have two NMEA0183 wires for data out, and two for data in.

Gray NMEA 0183 out (+) A
Yellow NMEA 0183 out (-) B
Green NMEA 0183 in (+) A Received data is output on WiFi*, USB & 0183
White NMEA 0183 in (-) B

Frankly this stuff is all super easy on a NMEA2000 network. But you would need a Seatalk to Seatalk NG converter to get the data onto the NMEA2000 network.

Re: Vesper XB8000 Raymarine Integration

the xb8000 is probbaly set to 38,400 baud. and will need to be changed to 4800 baud for the nmea input.

I would use the vesper app to check what info it's getting. not the plotter app. there is a data window that will show everything.

then you know it's not an issue of it sending data to other programs.

For NMEA in the XB 8000 is fixed at 4800, for out it is set at 38,400. Two separate sets of wires.

Unfortunately the Vesper only echos a small set of NMEA 0183 sentences. So depth and wind and other things don’t get echoed. It sounds like this might be what you may running into.

I don't think that is the case. The XB8000 converts a limited set of NMEA0183 data to NMEA2K but echoes all valid 0183 messages on wifi. I can for instance pick up pitch and heel on my laptop and tablet but not on my NMEA2K instruments (sadly)

I agree with smac999's suggestion to use the Vespermarine app to monitor what is passing through the device

this is the way it should work boat.net -->> NMEA 2000 (XB in) -->> (XB out - WLAN) NMEA 0183

When making a similar enquiry of my local Raymarine workshop, i was told that the Seatalk 1 does not carry AIS data

Re: Vesper XB8000 Raymarine Integration

if you can't get it to work with nmea 183. a raymarine seatalk to seatalkng converter will pass your seatalk data to the vesper nmea 2000. you'll need a stng to nk2 adapter cable as well.

Yes very true. But I think the OP is getting his AIS straight from the Vesper 8000 over WiFi. He wants to use the Vesper 8000 to get instrument data over the WiFi FROM his ST1 network. It should work.

This is what I think OP wants:
ST1-> E85001 (converts Seatalk to NMEA183) -> Vesper 8000 -> WiFi

Sounds most likely the Baud rate issue if everything is connected correctly and working.

P.S. I had a recent enquiry and Vesper Marine got back to me within a few hours with detailed response (during Cov-19).

Give Vesper a call or email they are very good at responding and even come on here and post at times.

Re: Vesper XB8000 Raymarine Integration

You shouldn't need to go to NMEA 2000 to get this to work. And hoolie is correct that all valid 0183 sentences are accepted as input and will by default be emitted on the 0183 and WiFi outputs (except AIS & GPS which only can come from the XB-8000 itself).

Besides baud rate, wiring, and polarity the only other thing I can think of off the top of my head is sentence checksums. I'm not familiar with the E85001 but I would expect it would create valid sentences and checksums. Perhaps someone else who has one and is using it with their XB-8000 can confirm.

The troubleshooting suggestions for viewing the data stream are best way to verify the XB-8000 is seeing the data.
