Re: Urgent: at sea, need B&G autopilot troubleshooting

Here is what I used to upgrade the autopilot breaker on my last delivery

https://www.amazon.com/Circuit-Break...7735902&sr=8-1

It worked fine on a 70 ft boat.

If the wiring is 6 mm2 it should be fine at 30 amps. Remember that the autopilot loads are not continuous--while they may peak at over 20 amps, the average draw is less than 5.

As far as the thread drift into communications goes, I may be old school, but a good blue water skipper should be able to resolve non-emergency problems without any outside communications. A system like the InReach is a huge improvement over what we had 30 years ago.

Re: Urgent: at sea, need B&G autopilot troubleshooting ** SOLVED

Sorry to say, having more AP trouble. Skipper still at sea. New set of codes.

Do you think I should post this as a new thread to get more attention, or leave it here?

Here is latest from the skipper:

Quote:
Autopilot did blow its 2nd 15a, installed 20a, It functioned good while, then stopped, returning a message "No rudder response H500-0 D" with that message quickly superseded by "No drivers available". Intend to again restore factory settings. Wind pilot is coping well, including in last night's varied conditions. After autopilot system only reset, the message returned is "no rudder data steering is unreliable". After a reset of the entire nav system, the same message. Then it goes through an auto selection process, with the same result. A damp wire in the ap detector? Another fuse? We're all good for now, but would be Grateful for ap just in case we hit that little dead spot just north of Kiritimati. If not, we'll cope. Cheers.
My feeling from 3000 miles away is that it isn't the DC panel fuse this time. Maybe another fuse, after AP computer? Fuse in cable supplying DD1 or internal to DD1? I'm wondering if the AP is drawing too much power even in normal conditions because of a fault, conditions were not too tough last night. Another possibility is the DD1 gear stripping failure happened, and it over-currents trying to move rudder with broken gears?

You guys saved the day last time. Any new advice?

Thanks!

Is the B&G Pilot computer not seeing the rudder position sensor?(RF25 on your system diagram pdf). You should be able to see the rudder position read by this if you display the autopilot on the Zeus.

Also, you should see this in your device list on the NMEA 2000 network.

Let's hope after 4 years, the problem has been resolved .

Very kind of you. Was years ago. Turned out to be a stripped gear. Would occasionally jam at unpredictable intervals and then blow a fuse. Rebuilt the autopilot and all is well. Thanks for the input!

Good example of why it's nice to come back and close out a post with the solution after 63 posts participating in diagnosis and solution.

I see your point and I agree, but it isn't as if the thread was ongoing and I was just ignoring all the replies as people wasted their time for 63 posts. The last post before today was mine from January 2020 and the problem wasn't yet solved. Today was the first post since then, and I immediately posted the resolution.
