Upgrade a Raymarine E120 to ?

I want to change out my 2 E120 MFD to something that will not require me to upgrade the radar, autopilot and all of the other inputs to the sea talk system.

Which is the way to go? C series MFD or S series or Axios?

If those are the old Seatalk network, that has been left behind a long time now. You can convert things like ST60s to SeatalkNG but the radar? doubtful and there are much better radars today.

Whilst this could get expensive real quick, there is still an active market in older RM plotters as folk have them in consoles and chart table cabinets so reluctant to change. My C80 sold well a couple of years ago in the Spring time for just this purpose as a standby spare.

When I was in your situation a few years ago I went the way Pete suggests. I upgraded to an Axiom plotter and a new Raymarine Quantum radar. I kept my old autopilot. Generally legacy autopilots play nicely with the Axiom plotters. You may or may not be able to control the autopilot directly from the chart plotter but in most cases you are able to track waypoints set on the plotter.

The issue is the radar. These used different interfaces over the years. You’ll likely have to upgrade the radar. The rest should be ok.

Which radar do you have? I recently upgraded my e120 to an axiom+. While it was a royal pain, I was able to keep my digital HD array functional with some critical software updates to enable it to communicate with the new axiom.

The key is that the old radar must be digital in order for the axiom to be able to talk with it. The e120 could work with either the analog or digital radars, so you’ll have to check to see which radar type you have.
