Unlock Cellular Modem

Since Internet access has become such a common part of the cruising life, I thought this post might be useful.

We discovered in Bocas del Toro this year that our TIGO Guatemala cellular modem (made by Huawei) would not work with the Movil SIM we purchased because it was locked to TIGO (which works in both Guate and Honduras). The Movil branded modem is actually the same Huawei modem that TIGO uses.

So, I went on-line and acquired an app called DC-Unlock from GMS Liberty (Cell Phone Unlock Codes : Mobile Phone Unlocking : Unlocked Cell Phones - GSM Liberty) which can be used to unlock cellular modems and phones. The cost was small, the app is easy to use, and GMS liberty support was good (had an account set-up problem which they resolved quickly). Each unlock costs you a few dollars, but sure beats buying another locked modem.

For phones, I have always found that once my initial contract period is up, the cell phone provider will tell me how to unlock the phone for free.
