I read that several months ago. There is no reason to loot the Titanic grave yard. Next they will dig up some king from eons ago and take his sword to put on display. No, leave the radio with the ship, where it belongs.

Just his sword? They dug up King Tut's entire tomb and took it on a massive worldwide road show.

It's difficult to imagine that the radio is intact enough to even recognize. It would have just as much historical significance to build another radio to specification and then demonstrate how it worked. I agree with those who say leave it with the other souls on board.

Yeah, saw that earlier too.

I'll leave the issue of the "sacredness" of sunken ships to others. The practical argument is...why go to the risk and effort to gut the wreck? The stuff will never be operational, it's cosmetically pretty far gone, too. They have underwater images of the room, blueprints from the Titanic and other ships of that period, and there may even be better examples of the same type radios around.

There's really nothing to be learned from retrieving the original gear (other than how hard it will be)... so it's not archaeology. All that they'll have is a nearly unrecognizable and nonfunctional "holy" relic that people will pay $20 a head to goggle at for 90 seconds.

It would make more sense to me to simply build a good reproduction of the radio room, looking just like it did on that night. With lit tubes and indicators, a looped file of Morse code and background sounds, etc.

correction before someone jumps on my mistake..The Hunley is located at the old naval yard in North Charleston..not Savanna...one Charleston’s most popular ‘attraction’...

Why? See the posts above about how they took Tut's tomb on a worldwide tour? They made a FORTUNE doing that! People paid for tickets, and stood in line for hours, to see the tomb. I have no doubt that they expect to be able to put Titanic artifacts on display, and collect money from people who want to see them.

Call me cynical if you want, but there is no question in my mind that this is -- in the end -- all about making money.

Imagine the hordes who would flock to see...not just an old radio, but a fully raised & reconstructed Titanic!

I loved the “mission specialists” that are paying moor than $100,000 ea for a dive.
Yeah, it’s not about the money
But what I don’t understand is unless I’m mistaken she was a British flagged vessel and is in International waters.
So what jurisdiction does a US Judge have?

Raising the Huntley was I think an honest historical endeavor.

Didn't the movie build a smaller scale version of the ship, plus interior shot sets? Why not just use their mockup? The idiots who'd pay to see it wouldn't know the difference...

Here is the Titanic's radio room with the radio in the center, I believe. They might want the radio because it is easy to get. The radio room was on the upper most deck.
