Tinkle Tinkle
Hi There, I have just had a new Raymarine Multifunctional Hybrid touch unit installed.
I do most of my sailing single handed. At the moment my passages are 2-5 days at a time. The alarm on the unit is pathetic and would not wake a tired sailor by any stretch of the imagination...Tinkle Tinkle...
i want to install an additional alarm-say a 100db peso version. My electrician/electronics guy says that Raymarine units are not set up to be able to add an external alarm.
I basically want to have a very loud alarm for AIS targets, anchor movement etc linked to my unit...Any ideas

Re: Tinkle Tinkle
Hi, Mendana,
If you can settle for a less than perfect option, there is a vibrating, alarming, countdown timer that will wake you at whatever time intervals you set it for, called "Gym Boss." Not the same thing at all, as what you're wanting, but now you have the unit, you're kinda in a fix and maybe you could handle a waking schedule?
Our AIS (Vesper Marine) does have those alarms, and they are loud enough for us, but again, it's not the same, 'cause one of us is on watch while the other sleeps, and single-handing, you haven't that luxury.
Good luck with it.
Ann

This may or may not work. Get a either a small lapel mike or a suction cup mike (designed to record old school telephone handpiece conversations) and attach it over the hole for the internal buzzer. Connect the mike to something that will amplify the noise to the desired level when required.

Re: Tinkle Tinkle
Hi Ann, thanks for the quick reply...I may well have to end up with this option, but I am hoping there is a very clever electronics person on CF who knows how to 'bypass' the Raymarine system and add a VERY loud alarm. It needs to be very loud as I often don't sleep for 24 hours on these passages so the alarm needs to wake a very sleep deprived sailor.

Re: Tinkle Tinkle
Thanks Reefmagnet...I may end up trying this although I'm hoping to set up a couple of 100db alarms (down below and in the cockpit), so I'm looking for more of a networked solution.

Re: Tinkle Tinkle
If / when out of warranty you could solder a reed relay in parallel with the existing buzzer and then drive external alarms via it's contacts. Will take a smidgen of engineering, however.

Re: Tinkle Tinkle
Add a relay as suggested. A hard of hearing friend of mine added a big bee hive light to his (not the same unit, but in concept you should be able to drive a relay off any electrically powered alarm).
Or, run a Nav App like OpenCPN on a tablet and use its alarms. Gives you redundancy too.
I expect something could be done to activate an alarm on tablet/phone based on NMEA sentences from RayMarine system also.

This may or may not work, but as others have said, once you have the relay activated this will allow the additional alarms. Key word being relay.

Deepfrz, this could work. I'll look into it. Thanks.

Re: Tinkle Tinkle
The output of your device is an audio frequency signal of very low amplitude, probably about the same as a headphone jack. Remove the speaker and feed the signal to an audio amp. Drive a couple of speakers, one waterproof in the cockpit and one in the cabin. An 12v marine audio amp is only $40.

Connect the audio out to the amplifier in with screened signal cable. However, before you do any of this, use a meter to check the audio signal is about 1 volt.

Re: Tinkle Tinkle
Raymarine has a device that connects to the SeaTalk or NMEA bus and can sound an external alarm. Didn't look into it too far so I don't know if it will work with the new MFD's but you can ask Raymarine.
