The Freedom of Youth

A friend has purchased a 29' Columbia for his son's graduation. He asked me and I gave him my advice and he asked if I could ask the experts (You) about the best compliment of electronic gear for this boat for coastal cruising. If you venture an opinion I will give it to him. The boy will do most of his sailing in the Carribean and coastal Central and South America.

The Standard Horizon GX2200 is a VHF, GPS, and AIS all in one. Then you could add a handheld $21.00 Suunto compass (or mounted), and a depth finder

If it has tiller steering, an ST 2000 tiller autopilot or a Simrad TP10 would be nice to have

Re: The Freedom of Youth

Agree with Thomm and if there is any change left a small chart plotter with fish finder and linked to the AIS is very useful for coastal sailing. I like watching what the sea bed is doing.

Final suggestion, direct the young skipper to You Tube and the Adventures of Tarka, to see how it can be done with a very simply life style. Easy blog to watch too.

i think a portable,rechargable sound system,a large box of condoms and plenty of flares to fire off on NYE would be more useful for the immediate future......

Hmmmm, sounds like my kind of provisioning!

Seriously, Thomm has it right, I sailed to Tahiti & on to HI with only a sextant & Grundig SW radio & VHF in 1980, and a big stack of paper charts.

I would also add at least a handheld Chart Plotter such as https://www.westmarine.com/buy/garmi...91?recordNum=9

or a mounted Plotter such as
https://www.westmarine.com/buy/garmi...arts--19386614

Oh, and an EPIRB and safety gear.

Of course he and you should take a sailing course offered near where you live, then;

LET THE ADVENTURE BEGIN!!

And keep us informed, love to hear sailing stories.

Nice.

I just bought a beginner plastic Davis Sextant to start playing around with as backup to my GPS's etc.
