Re: Tell me about your recent, successful electronics refit

Replaced Lowrance unit with a full Raymarine set 2 years ago - MFD, sonar, autopilot with ruder reference unit, more instruments to come for the N2K network. Super happy with it and have had great experience with everything so far. System appears to be stable, easy to use, easy to put together, support is pretty good (called them several times).

Still to do at some point in the future perhaps
- add radar
- N2K wireless/solar wind data
- ultrasonic depth/speed/temp sensors

Re: Tell me about your recent, successful electronics refit

My new to me 2008 Hanse 430e purchased last March came with same vintage Simrad gear. I did the removal and reinstall last summer with :

Zeus 3s 12” plotter
3 - Triton II displays at the helms
Simrad AP 42 auto pilot controller as I like the wheel to adjust course
B&G AIS 500 - I wanted the combo unit with VHF made by B&G but it was not available due to supply chain issues
DST 810
Halo 20+ radar
NAC 3 AP autopilot

I was under the impression at the time of purchase that the Zeus was loaded with charts to cover Puget Sound and Vancouver Island - that was what I was told at the time of purchase. Turns out no VI. Found that out when I crossed into Canada last week. After three days of being on hold, dropped calls etc, I finally got my C- Map chart down loaded. All I can say is RTFM - I used a 64 GB chip and they can only handle a maximum size of 32.

The only other issue I had was installing the WS 320 mast head sensor. I wanted a wired unit but I was unable to R&R the old cabling. So far the wireless wind sensor is working fine. I should note that I also reused the old radar cable and spliced on the new run to the plotter. I did the splice under my panels as access was best and dry. When the mast comes down next time, I’ll replace it.

So far all is good. Love the plotter!

Fair sailing all!

Re: Tell me about your recent, successful electronics refit

Bought our boat 2 and half years ago. It had what appeared to be new raymarine electronics (axiom 9). In truth pretty much nothing worked. Or was not connected. So embarked on a full refitt. Went for raymarine as I wanted to avoid compatibility issues. Paid a fortune for a professional team to work on the boat (40’ yacht). Nightmare. Poor workmanship. Resulted in an electrical fire. Found a better electrician. Fixed a lot of stuff. It’s taken over 2 years (still not quite done) rebuilt pretty much all wiring. Still a bit to go. Big lesson was - take the boat to a yard. Take the mast out. Pull out all old wiring. Put new wiring in conduits. Build new circuit board/panels/bus bars etc. doing it piecemeal is expensive and a waste of time. Cost is eye watering.
