Re: T-Mobile now has unlimited international DATA!

Looks pretty expensive for high speed data. I think dealing with the country-by-country hassle with an unlocked device will be cheaper and faster.

Re: T-Mobile now has unlimited international DATA!

Unlimited everything for $70 month is expensive? Unlimited texting and data.

I pay about $100 a month for my AT&T plan and that does not include unlimited anything nor anything outside the US.

Re: T-Mobile now has unlimited international DATA!

"What about high speed data though? It’s nice to have unlimited data, but it seems kind of pointless at 2G speeds. This is where you will have to spend money by purchasing what T-Mobile calls a “Speed Pass.” For $15, you can get 100MB of high speed data that lasts for a day. At $25, you get 200MB that lasts for a week. For the long term traveler, you can spend $50 to get 500MB that lasts for two weeks".

Not for me...too little data for too much money. I have an Island Planet Wifi. When I can find a signal, it will suffice. Itherwise an internet cafe to take care of the hour business I need to.

I have the $70 T Mobile plan which I used extensively when I'm United States. However when I'm out of country which is usually Canada, I buy a local SIM card.

I have an unlocked nexus 4 which I find the best and most inexpensive way of using a cellphone internationally.

Yes. 2G is too slow to use for data. I would end up paying more for higher speed data and that adds another $50 for two weeks worth. That's another $100 per month unless you can pick and choose weeks you need data. It seems more aimed at the occasional short-term traveller. I can do better for $170 per month. If you only want to make calls and text, a sim card and unlocked phone is the way to go.

Re: T-Mobile now has unlimited international DATA!

When we started cruising 3 years ago, AT&T had a similar offer for Cell Phones...

The catch was that you could only be out of the USA for a limited period of time, not fulltime. I think it was 30 or 60 days, no more than two times a year.

A lot of cruisers who though they were getting a deal, were shocked when they got their bills for $400 or more in roaming charges.

Be careful and read the fine print!!!!

Re: T-Mobile now has unlimited international DATA!

Eventually, the whole Internet access worldwide dilemma will be sorted out. It's always stepping stones like this that prompt it.

When your option is Iridium satellites for $2/minute with 2kb/s speed and 2-3 second latency, that 2G is looking like dedicated fiber.

Re: T-Mobile now has unlimited international DATA!

I forget the details but the T-Mobile plan has limited time abroad. It's meant for business travelers who leave the country occasionally not someone spending a year abroad.

Also, last time I checked, they prohibited tethering. There are hacks to get around it but not legitimately.

Good lord, that is expensive. Here in Guatemala we pay $38 for 20GB at 3G speed! (that's giga, not mega). Panama is similar, as is Honduras and Colombia.

No restrictions on tethering, no long-term contract (it is pay as you go), etc.

When we change countries, we simply get another SIM card - they are virtually free - and put money on them as we need.

At 2G speeds and even with unlimited data, that T-mobile plan sounds horrible - is that how much data costs elsewhere?

Thats $70 for unlimited talking, texting, and data. How much do you pay for making voice calls?

There is really nothing to forget - they are just now rolling this program out.

Considering I read the press release and they had information on how much time could be spent out of the country...yes, there is something to forget but there were clear limits that make it less than useful for a cruiser spending months abroad.
