Strange warning on Raymarine EV-1 heading sensor installation instructions
I'm about to install a Raymarine EV-1 sensor as part of an autopilot package, and in the installation instructions it has the following warning:
"Important: The installation must be performed with the vessel either on hard standing, or tied-up alongside a pontoon or berth."
I'm at anchor and can't imagine why I'd need to go get a marina slip in order to do this install. Are they suggesting that if you aren't on the hard or tied up to a dock you won't be able to get it level?

Maybe during set up there is a requirement for a constant heading for an extended time?
If so a stern anchor may provide that?

I would guess that Raymarine want to avoid liability.
While installing the autopilot, the steering may be disabled. If the anchor dragged at that time recovery might be difficult.

For the pump install. Not for the heading sensor.
It's a silly warning...

I have installed several, of course the boats were in a slip, just be sure you position the sensor forward. the only thing I can think of why they want you in a slip is for the setup.

It was just a guess, there was no such warning for my heading sensor and other than wanting heading to remain constant, I can't think of any reason they want you on the hard or in a slip.
Call it set up or initialization if you will, but I'm guessing it wants a constant heading for some reason?

Re: Strange warning on Raymarine EV-1 heading sensor installation instructions
RayMarine Document 88016-2 , installation for EV-1, and ACU 100, 200, 300, 400 models. " Page 13,Automatic setup - no calibration required. The rudder gain.rudder damping and counter rudder, and compass calibration settings required by existing autopilots are no longer necessary. "
MY note : Vessel must NOT be moving when connection is made. The above " no longer necessary" were the old AutoHelm/Raymarine 360 degree circles which were necessary for the old Fluxgates to balance themselves.
Doing this entire project install on a Kronos 45 Cat as we speak.

Re: Strange warning on Raymarine EV-1 heading sensor installation instructions
We installed our EV-1 plus other components April 2016 while tied to a mooring ball. We have not experienced any issues with calibration.
Enjoy!

wrong. It's for the sensor heading. but I agree, it didn't matter when I installed the sensor.

Wrong again. There is a set up procedure, it's right there in the manual.

Re: Strange warning on Raymarine EV-1 heading sensor installation instructions
Ive installed 2, one on a cat at jetty, one on a mono at mooring. I ignored the warning aa assumed it was incase it disabled steering during installation. On the cat it was easy to line up the little arrow so it faced forward. On the mono I had to have a bit of a guess due to curved hulls so I left cover of the heading sensor, did sea trials then it was easy to move it one notch if it was reading to far away from gps instruments. Ended up rotating it one notch, worked perfectly, clicked on cover to lock into place, all good.
