Starlink Standby Offshore

Can anyone confirm that standby mode allows ocean uses at slow speed?

Re: Starlink Standby Offshore

There’s a rather lengthy explanation on Winlink about the Pause with Stand-by mode feature..best go to the Winlink web site and read this feature..

Can you possibly provide a link or section of site to find on?

Cheers,

Re: Starlink Standby Offshore

I recently signed up for stand by use, but as soon as I went offshore there was no connection, not even at low speed, and the app said "restricted use".
Only option was to change the subscription and then I was allowed to opt in to offshore date. After that I was online.
So it is possible to upgrade the subscription while offshore, but it is not possible to get any weather reports or send small messages, usin the stand by subscription while offshore.

Re: Starlink Standby Offshore

Let AI answer the question:

“No, Starlink's Standby Mode is not designed for ocean use beyond 12 nautical miles offshore. It provides limited-speed data primarily for use on land and within territorial waters, but it does not support continuous or high-bandwidth maritime activities.
Key facts about Standby Mode for ocean use:
Limited to coastal waters: Standby Mode works in coastal and inland waterways, but your device's GPS will enforce a geofence that disables the service beyond approximately 12 nautical miles from shore.
Requires different plans for offshore: For offshore use beyond the 12-nautical-mile limit, you need a different service plan, such as Roam Unlimited with "Ocean Mode" enabled or a Global Priority plan.
Not for constant use: Starlink explicitly states that Standby Mode is "not intended for constant, maritime, or high-bandwidth use".
Low speed and data: The service provides very limited speeds, typically capped at 500 Kbps, and is meant for basic needs like emergency messaging and email.
Attempting to use Standby Mode beyond coastal waters could lead to service interruption or suspension. The system is designed to enforce the limits of each service plan based on the dish's location“

Thanks for that (I ASSUME) real human experience!

The month of offshore 50gb is going to cost me more than the Mini! But this particular stretch to SA is about the trickiest stretch so I guess I'll go for it.

Re: Starlink Standby Offshore

Yes I am NOT a robot, rather just a faulty human
Be awaere, the 50 GB roam subscription does not allow for "opt in" to offshore data. I found that out as I like you thought the 50 GB roamin subscription would allow that I opted in to pay per GB for offshore use.
So in the end you will be paying more than expected.
On the good side is, I have been offshore for 7 days, and during this period only used 20 GB data, so the total cost was not crazy, and I enjoyed being able to stay in contact with friends and creditors back home
PS: My boat was born in SA, and I wish you a safe trip there.
