ST2000 tiller pilot, conversion to N2k for info from chartplotter

Hello magnificent people,

I am looking for the expertise of seasoned veterans of marine electronics. Your input and experience is kindly welcomed and would definitely help me advance in this wet world.

I own a Raymarine ST2000 Plus tiller pilot. The pilot itself comes with its own plug, but has the Rx and Tx for NMEA0183 interface. My plan is to implement a gateway to convert the 0183 into 2k using this following device: https://www.yachtd.com/products/nmea0183_gateway.html

I also own a Lowrance HDS 5m chartplotter. This is a fantastic piece of equipment to own. The plotter has the capacity to create routes onto the navigation chart. I am hoping the plotter would talk to the tiller pilot and transmit the bearings from the created path, thus enabling me to have a full auto-pilot system on board.

Does anyone of you kind people have experience related to the described? Would my plan bear fruits? If not, what would I need to change to achieve this?

Thank you

Hi there... I don't know the answer but I know how you could find out.

The HDS 5m has NMEA0183 input and output according to the manual:

https://www.manua.ls/lowrance/hds-5m/manual?p=31

Page 35 says that certain NMEA2000 sentences are bridged to NMEA0183 so I assume you have NMEA2000 wind direction which you want as NMEA0183 from the plotter.

The manual says that the plotter will output MWV which is the wind data you probably want in the ST2000.

I think you just need to connect the NMEA2000 network into the plotter and the NMEA output of the plotter to the ST2000. Looks like you'll need to try the RS422 and the RS232 and see which one works (see that first link)
