The BFO is used to resolve SSB transmissions. That includes digital modes. If the radio is marketed as HF or SW without mentioning SSB or having a BFO, it is not going to work for SSB or WEFAX or other digital modes.

Uh, no. It allows you to intelligibly hear upper or lower sideband. Has nothing to do with frequency.

My bad, you are absolutely right, upper and lower sideband. Caught me when I was sleep deprived. I used one of those radios for offshore weather 30 years ago and was quite pleased with it.

HF Weather Fax by Black Cat Systems on Google Play.

Ive only tested it once, but reception quality was good. Does not appear to have many features so may be less useful in the real world. Have seen others with more features (auto start, tuning graph, etc), but have not tried them yet.
