Spreader Camera?

Has anyone put one of those Raymarine video cameras or some other kind of video camera up your mast?

It looks to me like it could be really useful to increase the effectiveness of watchkeeping, so that whoever is at the nav table can keep an eye on what's going on in front of the boat. I for one would be a lot less nervous at the nav table if I could see where we were going. One of the wonderful things about the Oyster I didn't buy was that you could actually see through the front salon windows while seated at the nav table, alas that is not true on my boat.

The only problem I see is that sails will block it on one side, reducing its usefulness when under sail. I guess it could be mounted at the masthead to elminate that problem, but then the angle of view might not be so good.

Hmmm.

With wireless security cams, dashcams, all sorts of options on the market, it is really question a question of budget and you can put anything (tiny, larger, more robust) as high aloft as you chose. Heck, one of the car companies just came out with a "birdsye" 360-degree parking camera system.
