Simrad Precision 9 MFD compatibility

Greetings.

I need to replace my Simrad RC42 rate compass. This is an older unit that is now out of production.

It has been replaced by the Precision 9 compass.

My autopilot computer is a Simrad AC42 and my MFD is a Simrad NSE-8.

Would a Precision 9 play well with these components? I'm finding it very difficult to find clear information on this.

Many thanks,
Carter

Re: Simrad Precision 9 MFD compatibility

Short answer: YES, probably.

Pro tip: make sure you calibrate it, and do it _after_ installation following instructions in owner's manual.

Longer answer:
In a nutshell, all your compass does is send messages with Heading into whatever network it's connected to, that's all. Those messages are universal and every common autopilot/mfd will understand them.

I don't own any of simrad devices you mentioned.
But quick online search told me that RC42 outputs data into nmea2000, and so does Precision 9, and both AC42 and NSE-8 accept inputs from the same network.
So, it should be plug-and-play, a direct replacement.

If in doubt, search for images of "nmea2000 connectors" and double-check that they look same as what you have on your boat.

Re: Simrad Precision 9 MFD compatibility

Great response, thank you. Yes, I have n2k devices on the network as well as 0183 and they do all seem to play well together.
