SEA 1617 antenna tuner with Icom M710 ssb radio

I need to know how to hook up a SEA 1616 Antenna Tuner to an Icom M710 SSB radio.

1. Coax from radio to tuner (RG8X or RG213)

2. 12VDC to tuner, fused at about 2A

3. GTO-15 feedline from tuner to antenna

4. RF ground connected to tuner ground lug

That's it. The SEA tuners operate very much like the SGC SG-230, i.e., they use RF to sense frequency and begin tuning if necessary.

The "Tuner" button on the M-710 won't work, and isn't needed.

Thanks Bill,
Does the 12Volt come from the radio or the tuner?
I hook up the radio and took a reading on the small wires that go to the tuner and did not get a 12v reading.

Not exactly sure what you're asking, but the 12v should come from your battery bank to both the radio and the tuner. Use good size wire rated for the length of the run. Some people use a small motorcycle battery or computer backup system sealed battery to power the radio to help keep interference out of it, not necessary though.

Once you get 12V to the radio with 10G wire then does the 12v come out of the radio to the tuner or does the tuner have its own independent 12v source?

Ed,

You need to connect the tuner (small wires) to a source of 12VDC....your panel, the batteries, etc. Put a 2A in-line fuse in the positive line. Be sure to get the polarity correct. Not sure how many wires are coming out of your tuner...they vary a bit....but what you want is the positive wire (usually red) and the negative wire (usually black). If there are others they're intended for use with SEA radios, not the Icom.

The 12VDC power is what the tuner needs to adjust it's settings for the best match when you transmit. If no power is present, the tuner won't tune.

Thanks for the info. I will just use the existing four wire cable coming out of the tuner and connect only the red and black wires and not the other two.

The tuner needs an external source of 12VDC, as in my earlier post.

Power to the radio needs to be clean and adequate. Normally, it's best to take it directly from the house batteries -- not thru the panel -- using AWG6 cable for runs up to 20' one-way, or AWG4 cable for longer runs. If you do this, you'll need an ANL or MRBF fuse on BOTH the positive and the negative cables, located very near the batteries.

Bill,
I am just replacing the SEA 222 radio with the Icom M710 and plan to use the existing wires, as they worked well on the other radio.
My only question was about the small wiring harness that comes out of the tuner SEA 1617 Tuner and I guess I just will use the red and black wires and join then with the red and black wires on the Icom radio and ignore the other two wire and leave then not connected, is that right.
