Satellite TV Coverage in Mexico

We're considering a KVH M3DX hi-def receiver for our catamaran which will be in La Paz in the Sea of Cortez for about a year.

Does anyone have experience in using satellite tv in this area, what is USA reception like - is there an option other than Sky-Mexico?

Appreciate comments and advice.

Thanks

Paul

I've worked in the past as a Dish Network installer and as long as you are off shore you should be able to get Dish and DirecTV down to about the yucatan. But, you may not be able to hit the hi def satellites because they are at a lower orbital position so by the time you get that close to the equator the curvature of the atmosphere is going to start making those signals tough to get. But, even then you should still have access to the 110 or 119 sats.

I just noticed you are going on the pacific side...a little less signal available out there, but should be good for at least part of the trip.

West coast reception answers

You have made a great choice on a dish. Our experience has been while off Baja and our friends who are now in El Salvador.
1. You cannot get HD programming south of Ensenada, from anyone (not the 110 or 119 satellite. Everything south of Ensenada requires the use of the Galaxy 5 satellite and requires a special LNB from KVH (about $175 from KVH).
2. If you have DirecTV now in the US you should get everything up and running with a receiver from home (we used the one we had in the spare bedroom).
3. DirecTV Latin America (Puerto Rico) has programming similar to your USA programming but with New York network schedules (3 hours sooner than California) and in english. Our friends went with DirecTV LA-Trinidad and it seems to be in Spanish.
4. The DirecTV-LA DVR costs $350 shipped to you in USA. It works as far north, I hear, as San Jose.
5. I have no information about Sky Mexico, but as you have figured out, 90% of the programming is in Spanish. This is the opposite of DirecTV Latin America as it is 90% in English.
6. We were told to by KVH to buy M5 because we were a monohull (less stable platform). We did and are very happy with the whole deal. Any kind of weather and bumpy seas and we still get American Idol (won’t your crew be glad).

Thanks for the advice on the satelllite coverage in Mexico .
Very helpful and we'll follow up with a coverage note to help others in the future.
