The earlier comment about NMEA 0183 being RS-422 and NOT RS-232 is very important. The two are NOT compatible. They might seem to work together, but that is just by luck and happenstance. Your call on whether you want to run your boat on something that is compatible and reliable, or something that seems to work.

I haven't used this with a Pactor Modem yet but for most things I have found these adapters to be pretty damn good.
