RPM sensor on really old diesel engine

My old engine (Faryman A40) does not have any electronics except for a temp senson, alternator and starter. Is there any good way of adding a RPM meter to it? The alternator has ONLY DC output, so no easy access to its RPM...

Tiny Tach (diesel) should do the job. The sensor clamps around the injection pipe and registers each pulse of diesel through the injection line.

I don't know how well they work but they have been around for awhile.

Yo could take the alternator to an auto electrician and have tach lead fitted to it. It is simple job, they attach a wire to one of the stator windings.

Calibrate any tach with a free smartphone RPM app.

What alternator do you have?

As mentioned by Wotname, you can usually add a "R" post out the back of alternator case for a tach output. The alternator rpm readings maybe need to be off slightly due to different pulleys, etc. and using the calibration app will give you a better idea of the true rpm.
