Reviews of the Typmar Maglev Vertical Wind Turbine

I have recently looked into sources of renewable energy in preparation for some water sailing">blue water sailing. I own a 40' ketch and plan on using the Typmar Maglev Wind turbine in tandem with some solar cells. The design of the Typmar intrigued me and with the little reading I have done, it seems to be quite the invention. It can take wind from all directions without twirling about and will start spinning at a mere 2 mph. The truth is though, I have yet to really dive into the specifics of marine turbine power and would love if anyone had any hands on experience to share with me. If you've owned a Typmar Maglev yourself I would love to hear your response to it. If not I would also appreciate my referral to any notable and reliable Marine turbine.

Thank you, Dillon

one of the best turbines known to me is LVM (now Jabsco) Aerogen.
It is very quiet and has bigger blades (1.20 m) compared to average
0.9 of most turbines on the market.
Read this: AEROGEN 6 WIND GENERATORS

Typmar Maglev looks very interesting, costs about 2K$ with mounting set.
Still, I could not find any reviews/opinions in the net.
Should try and contact producer (Shenzhen TYPMAR Wind Energy Technology Co.,Ltd. ) directly.

The page you shared holds some very interesting points on harvesting wind energy. I thank you for sharing that.

One of the reasons I enjoy the idea of the Typmar is the fact that it is a vertical turbine and can take wind from any direction. It's also very unique and asthetically pleasing.

Re: Reviews of the Typmar Maglev Vertical Wind Turbine

It turns out that vertical wind turbines are fundamentally low efficiency. Yes, quiet; yes, a bit more esthetic; but fundamentally (by basic physics*) restricted in power output.

So if you are only looking for modest power output it might be an ok solution for you.

*A horizontal axis turbine's swept area always faces the wind. But with a vertical axis wind turbine, the swept area is a cylinder perpendicular to air flow. As such, part of the “swept area” is working, while part is simply being blown around, not at an optimal angle to generate lift. This results in a vertical axis wind turbine rotor that is less efficient than a horizontal axis rotor.

Yes, the Maglev does have a low power output compared to others, (still putting out a modest 300W) but the turbine is not very "inefficient." The Typmar is magnetically levitated to alleviate friction for what that's worth. There are many threads on this forum about the MAST-R vertical wind turbine set which is a dual turbine that mounts on either side of the mast and puts out a whopping 1.5 MW. You should look it up.

Re: Reviews of the Typmar Maglev Vertical Wind Turbine

Biggest issue I see with the maglev is the weight I think it's around 25 kg. Add in the gyroscopic forces in a seaway and that's a huge load on any mount.

If I were to have my own Maglev I would probably mount it at the top of the Mizzen mast. Maybe not the best idea if you feel that way about the weight but our 40' offshore boat is a heavy duty vessel that takes quite a lot to move. It takes quite a load to move it and is very stable in a storm. As long as the Mizzen mast is strong enough, I believe the Typmar would have little effect on performance.

I don't know anything about this type of windturbine - but I certainly would hesitate to mount 25+ kg on the top of my (mizzen) mast. Your boat and you know its characteristics - but you might want to run some calculations on its effect on stabilty and AVS before doing.

Our books have gotten 5 star reviews on Amazon. Several readers have written "I never thought I would go on a circumnavigation, but when I read these books, I was right there in the cockpit with Vinni and Carsten"

Lightbulb Re: Reviews of the Typmar Maglev Vertical Wind Turbine

Typmar (or Timar) is not the only Darrieus-rotor small VAWT on the market.
E.g. Taiwan-made Hi-VAWT DS300 is of very similar design:
Hi-VAWT DS-300 Vertical Axis Wind Turbines

There are also others, like Aeolos 300W (UK / China):
Residential Vertical Axis Wind Turbine - Aeolos 300W

and Cygnus Power 200W (Singapore): Cygnus Power 200W

Still, none of the above seem to be fit for on-boat installation (at least,
the producers do not mention such option). I asked Typmar directly – no
reply so far…

The Mast-R VAWT by Kronos Energy Solutions was discussed here
a couple of years ago. Well, there are a few relevant videos from
boatshows on the net, like:

No mention of the company since 2013 and it’s website is dead – R.I.P. to my opinion.

So the only viable VAWT designed for marine use I found so far is
V150 Savonius-type model by Leading Edge (UK):

LE-v150 Vertical Axis Wind Turbine | Leading Edge Turbines

It is rather lightweight (13 kgs) and compact – a cylinder 1100 mm long
and 330 mm diam (including mast attachment brackets). An “Extreme”
storm-resistant version looks very promising.
A “twin” installation of these thingies on the mizzen might be considered ?

Will cost a bit more than a single “conventional” HAWT, but does not swivel
and has the same power; plus, if one of turbines fails, you still get a half of juice
from the 2nd one

The le-v-150 is only rated at 24W at 17.8mph! (Gale force).

It only reaches 200W at 55mph ! (Storm force).

Cheers,
JM.

The U.S. National Weather Service defines a gale as 34–47 knots (63–87 km/h, 17.5–24.2 m/s or 39–54 miles/hour) of sustained surface winds.[1] Forecasters typically issue gale warnings when winds of this strength are expected.

Thank you for the information. I also contacted Typmar over a month ago and also have yet to receive a reply. I don't expect one anytime soon.
