Replacing Hydraulic Ram and Pump

I am working on a 42'HR 1985 (displ. 26,000)and need to replace the Smith Industries autopilot Ram (which is a balanced ram)and pump. I have been looking all over the internet to try and find a Ram that would fit mechanically with out having to do a major refit to mount the new ram. I have looked at Accu-Steer, Simrad, B&G, Garmin, and Octopus. I need a 8.75" stroke so the 9"rams would be to close so I am looking for 11". When I start looking at the mechanical dimensions everything looks to big. I happened to find a new Raymarine ram P/N E12207 which is an unbalanced ram with an external pump that looks like it will fit. nice a small max vessel disp 44,000 lbs. I have no experience with unbalanced rams everything I have worked with has been balanced. The unit comes with a pump and it was designed to run with the Raymarine X30 core pack. I will be driving the new installation with a new Simrad AP28/AC42 pilot
I am looking for any comments or other recommendation.

Thanks
Happy sailing

Re: replacing hydraulic ram and pump

These guys carry the L&S hydraulic drives which have a very good reputation and are the same as used by NKE.

Have you looked at the Teleflex family of products (several brand names and ranges of gear)?

Their web site Teleflex Marine has lots of detailed info available.

I have had good experience with their tech support also.

Have you tried Kobelt? http://kobelt.com/pdf/brochure_steering.pdf

Call Wagner in B.C Canada. Ask for the NT 40 Or NT 60. Those might fit.

Re: Replacing Hydraulic Ram and Pump

My Raymarine autopilot ram P/N E12207 failed after 4 seasons due to the solenoid mounted on the ram. The replacement part cost $400 and was out of stock for 6 weeks when I needed it most.

Now the Raymarine hydraulic pump has started squealing.
