Replacing Garmin GWS Wind Vane

I recently went up the mast of my 2011 Bavaria 45 Cruiser to replace the wind vane on my Garmin GWS 10 anemometer and could not get the wind vane to seat into the housing securely. Couldn't get high enough up the mast to view from the top so was trying to fit the wind vane while stretching.
Has anyone else had this problem as I need to go up the mast again and have another attempt at seating the wind vane. If there is a technique to getting the wind vane to click into the housing I would appreciate some advice.
