Replacement Autopilot

I am looking to replace the old Robertson AP3000 pilot on our Jenneau Sun Odyssey 42.2. The hydraulic drive unit was upgraded a few years ago to a Simrad HLD350 MK2

Does anyone know how if this drive unit would be compatible with a Raymarine Evolution EV-200 which I think is the correct modern Raymarine pilot for our boat?

Thanks

Re: Replacement Autopilot

Pretty sure that it would theoretically work. The maximum current spec on the raymarine type 1 linear drive is 15 amps, while the HLD350 says 10 amps. The wiring is simple--two for the motor and two for the clutch/solenoid.

However, I wouldn't trust the EV-200 not to burn out before 15 amps.

The HLD is spec'd for a max 10 ton boat, which is marginal for a Odyssey 42.
If you only need to hand steer for 12 hours when the AP conks out, the HLD 350 and the EV-200 will fit your needs. However, if you want to cross oceans, I would consider going up a size on both the AP and the drive.

Re: Replacement Autopilot

When we purchased Imagine, it had a Simrad AC42 with the HLD 2000 drive. The "old" Simrad head controller display had failed. I was unable to have the AP16 (I forget the model) serviced. We decided to replace the electronics with "modern" gear. We chose the NAC-3. We had the HLD serviced at a local hydraulic shop. It was the best $100 I have ever spent. Simrad is now under the umbrella of Navico, along with B&G and Lawrence.

Any manufacturer's AP electronics SHOULD work, but make sure that it can provide the current to drive the ram/hydraulics.

I love our AP, especially the Bluetooth controller fob.

BTW, Imagine weighs 35,300 as of last week on the travel lift.

Thanks, when you say you wouldn’t trust the EV-200 to burn out is that based on it being marginally sized for the boat?

We are coastal cruising at the moment.. I would like to think I could go further in the future but certainly not in next few years
