Repair and service Icom m802

I have an older M802 that does not power up and there is a possibility the boat was struck by lightning before i got it. The unit did power up a few months ago but I was not able to really test it properly as the backstay antenna needs to be replaced. I’ve confirmed power is getting to the radio but haven’t looked any further. When it was powering up the lcd screen wasn’t in the best of shape and I definitely need a new mic.

As the radio is old and I live in the Virgin Islands I’m trying to determine if it is worth the expense and effort to send it somewhere for evaluation and repair? If so is Icom the best place to send it or are there others who work on these radios and can bring it up to date?

Re: Repair and service Icom m802

This might be the closest to you, unless there is a commercial service center.

As for fixing the radio that is totally up to you. Sounds like if the antenna needs to be replaced and the radio appears faulty, then is will be safe to assume your antenna tuner is also faulty. But, if you do not use the radio that much then probably the answer is no, don't repair it. However, you might sell it for parts and get another one. Just be aware you might have to replace more than just the antenna and radio (depending on what else is connected to the radio).
