Remote boat monitoring, sorry, another thread.

Got a new Hanse last year that came with Sentinel boat monitoring. Very basic, can login and get battery, bilge, and can set a geofence.

I so far get this for free, not sure if that goes away, but I would like to get more info. I think I can upgrade the service, but still not sure what sensors I can put in. Nor do I get control of what I get alerted to. If the battery goes to 0 I get an alert, but I can't set it to tell me if it goes to 12.2 etc. Would like to put in for me to see water/fuel tank level, (which shows up on my Simarine panel), I would put in a temp/humidty sensor, maybe a camera? but at least a mag open/close sensor on the hatch.

I do have experience with a Pi, I know I would need to somehow get something with a SIM card as the boat is on a mooring w no wifi nearby. So possibly there is an app for a Pi for remote boat monitoring already done?

Not looking for Starlink, this is a monitor when my boat is on the mooring.

I have followed this requirement for a while, I know it is changing constantly. Ideally, not only would I like to monitor, but if communications were bi directional, e.g. if the battery was low, maybe I could disconnect. The boat also came with a SiMarine pico panel for controlling all the breakers, showing tank levels, this seems like an intelligent device as well, it does have a NMEA 2k bus port on it. Looking for groupthink. Thanks.

Re: Remote boat monitoring, sorry, another thread.

This is on my list of projects for this fall/winter. I planned to build my own from the ground up, but will look around at the open-source community for any jump starts. (I have a ton of experience with IoT, robotics, software, etc. and most of my friends do too.)

My goals/requirements:
  • Video monitoring, multiple cameras, interior and exterior, with pan/zoom
  • Cameras easily removed (I will only have them attached when the boat will be unattended for a while).
  • Motion detection in the cockpit and interior (remote notification if someone boards the boat)
  • Battery monitoring
  • Remote switching - ability to turn circuits on/off remotely (I might only care about turning them off.)
  • Remote propane alarm
  • Bilge monitoring
  • Temperature and humidity monitoring
  • Seacock position sensors
  • Wifi not required
  • Mobile app or web interface
  • Ability to remotely program the system (so I can publish software updates without physically being on the boat)
Most of these have been done already in the open-source community and/or I have built them already for other projects. I haven't seen them combined into a tight platform.

When I get this done, I'll let folks know, in case anyone is interested. It'll probably be a year, though, before I get around to it and get it done.

Re: Remote boat monitoring, sorry, another thread.

I was looking at BRNKL which is fairly reasonable, and it includes monitoring for $300/yr, but they've got a coupon code from one of the sailing YouTubers that is 10% off and 50% off monitoring for the first year. Not the cheapest, but I like the tidyness of the system, and they have a lot of extra monitoring bits (bilge pump, battery level, etc that can be added).

I just don't want to have to tinker with something, and having something that works is worth some extra cost. After 25 years in tech, I'm tired of fiddling with stuff.

Re: Remote boat monitoring, sorry, another thread.

I’m all in on the Victron ecosystem, so do all my monitoring through VRM. From anywhere in the world, I can check the state of my electrical system, the levels of all my tanks (including bilge), i environmentals down below, and various other things. I can also remote in and control things (turn inverter on/off, modify set points, etc) and thanks to the included SignalK and connection to my N2K network, I can check things like the current wind conditions, vessel position, depth under keel, and so forth.

I really like it.
