Really nice AIS receiver

I recently installed a Standard Horizon GX2200 and RAM 3 remote mic. We keep our Catalina 30 in Baytown right off the Houston Ship channel. We sail in the evenings alot in the summer due to the heat here. It is sometimes difficult to pick out the lights from the ships and barges against the lights from shore so an AIS receiver seemed like a good idea. There are many choices and I wanted something simple. The GX2200 seemed to fit the bill, it cost me about $400 total for the radio and remote. I was able to use the existing VHF antenna. It also has a GPS function so no need to purchase a separate unit. AIS requires GPS for positioning so most units require an additional unit and wiring which can be complex. This was a very easy installation and it works very well. We sailed in about 11 pm Saturday night and knew where the ships and barges were before we could see them visually. The only difficult part of the installation was running the wires for the remote station. Too bad that Standard did not design the remote to be wireless. What a terrific deal though, a new VHF radio, GPS, AIS receiver and a remote for about $400, unbeatable!

Re: Really nice AIS receiver

It's a nice unit ( I hope). Just installed the same. The data is linked to the display on a Garmin MFD. The only problem I've had is the inability to cancel a warning for a docked ship. The alarm keeps going off. Probably operator error. The dealer is going to send the installer out for a few hours on the water tutorial.

Re: Really nice AIS receiver

I didn't hook mine to the Garmin, I am just using the display on the remote. I have been leaving the alarm off so far, we have so much ship traffic that I think it would drive me crazy. It worked really well the other night. I used the 1 mile scale and twice saw barges on the display before I picked them up visually. I am an airline Captain, this thing is just like the TCAS in the airliner without the price tag.

We use the same Standard Horizon system including the RAM remote for the cockpit. We also installed the hailer, but rarely use it, instead we grab the canned air horn when needed.

Re: Really nice AIS receiver

We have the GX2150, with the AIS data plugged into our chartplotter. All in all, we are very happy with it. One of these days I do intend to install the Ram mic.

They do seem to have some good deals. Just bought a new GPS EPIRB from them for about the same price of a replacement battery for my old EPIRB.

Re: Really nice AIS receiver

Gonna try to get the GX2200 for $300 plus tax.

West Marine has a Thanksgiving online ONLY for 15% off. The exemptions do not include Standard Horizon. $399.99- is $340. Standard Horizon for that model had a factory rebate for $40 if bought before 12/31....

Here's hoping.......
