Raymarine Smartcontroller - Range

Just installed a used Raymarine Smartcontroller. Installed the receiver in the nav-station. Works great in the cockpit, though when walking around the boat, the signal loses connection. Seems to occur when moving forward past mast.

A previous thread mentioned 200' range - I'm getting about 15'. Also mentioned cats and using on the trampoline. Seems I should get better range.

I'm sure the limited range has to do with my installed location - inside the nav-station, with lots of wires, fiberglass hull, wood panels,....

What is the expected range? Where do folks normally install the receiver? Is there a way to add an external antenna? Alternately, with a longer SeaTalk cable, I could move the receiver to up under the hull, possibly reducing the interference inside the nav-station.

Thank for your advice,
Don
