Raymarine Smart Controller battery replacement

I need to replace battery on my smart controller. Raymarine instruction manual states to send it back their repair shop for this!

It can’t be that difficult.

Have decided to give this a go myself, so before I damage case (like previous owner), seeking advice on how to open unit up. Screws appear easy enough, but it’s the slots at top/back of unit I am concerned about.

Any advice will be appreciated.

Thanks

Raymarine Smart Controller battery replacement

There are 2 batteries, AA size NiCd. I bought 2 at Frys for about $15. Desolder the old ones and solder in the new ones. It’s pretty easy. Just take it slow. Remove screws from back and pull it off. Watch carefully when putting back together to maintain water tight seal. Not a big project.

This is what it looks like inside after removing batteries. (Assuming attachments work)

Edit: cannot attach photo right now. The batteries are taped together and soldered to a two pin connector. It’s easy to cut the tape off and solder the old wires into new batteries. Tape them up and put it back together.

Inside the slots are prongs. slip a thin blade (jewelers screwdriver, etc) in to release the prongs.

Re: Raymarine Smart Controller battery replacement

I would Google the Varta P/N on the package and attempt to order one. Otherwise, if you have a large electronics store about you might find a replacement there. Note that battery is NiMH, not NiCad. The two types are not interchangeable.

Re: Raymarine Smart Controller battery replacement

Sorry for the confusion. The batteries are AA NiMh (nickel metal hydride). Don’t think NiCad is available much anymore.

It’s hard to find exactly 1600mAH so a higher value will still work.

The resistor (possibly a diode) thing is part of the charge control system. Be sure to leave it as you found it.

Re: Raymarine Smart Controller battery replacement

I need to know where the wires for the batteries connect. Red,blue black. My batteries were corroded and when I pulled the tape off the wire came with it.
I think the red goes to +ve and the blue and black are common -ve but does one go before the thermistor or both after?

Re: Raymarine Smart Controller battery replacement

So Red to positive, along with blue and black to negative via diode

Re: Raymarine Smart Controller battery replacement

The actual black blue connections are not very clear in the pic. Is the wiring you are showing original ? When I look at mine the black wire looks to have a U at the end so as to come in before the thermistor and the blue wire is shorter to solder on after the thermistor. I am not saying you are wrong, I just want to do it the right way and I appreciate your prompt reply a lot.
