Raymarine i60 or i70 Apparent Wind Question

I am currently upgrading my 15 year old Raymarine electronics and need input on the comparative accuracy of Raymarine's analog i60 apparent wind/wind speed instrument vs. that of the apparent wind angle/wind speed screen image of Raymarine's i70.

My marine electronics guy is suggesting at the helm I have two i70's and one i60 apparent wind instrument because he says the i60 is more accurate than what would show on an i70. I'm not wild about different instrument models on a brand new installation, but inaccurate wind instruments won't be acceptable either.

Anyone with experience using i70 apparent wind angle/wind speed screens? Other perspectives?

Re: Raymarine i60 or i70 Apparent Wind Question

I'm also going through the same process.
Some lightening has blown my ST60 Multi, Wind & Tridata.

I will need (as a minimum) i50 Tridata, i60 Wind and an i70 but was thinking 3 * i70's would give more flexibility.

So, I have the same query as Zdog but also:

Is the i70 display as easy to view as the i60 and i50, especially in direct sunlight?

Any other thoughts are most welcome,
Thanks

I can't imagine how/why the i60 is more accurate than the i70 at displaying wind speed. Makes no sense, the transducer outputs wind speed, the i60/i70 display it.

Re: Raymarine i60 or i70 Apparent Wind Question

Hi DotDun,

Here is the feedback from Hinckley Service I received on this point about accuracy: "THE ONLY ISSUE WE HAVE EXPERIENCED ON A FEW OTHER BOATS IS THAT THE WIND SPEED/DIRECTON IS NOT ALWAYS AS ACCURATE AS THE MAST HEAD CABLE PLUGS DIRECTLY INTO THE I60 BUT GOES INTO A JUNCTION BOX WHEN USING THE I70 FOR WIND INFO, WE WOULD RECCOMEND KEEPING THE I60 (and two I70s) at the helm."

It stills makes no sense. Even if the i70 is 250ms behind the i60 due to external box processing time, it'll still display the correct number. A human would only be able to tell the time lag if the 2 units were side by side.
