Raymarine E120 bizarre issue.

So, the mfd wasn’t showing the chart. AIS info was there, radar overlay was there but no chart detail. I have had this before and removing the card, blowing some contact cleaner on the pins and reinserting the card have sorted it.

This time no joy with that but I was playing around and discovered that if I view the split page showing chart and depth sounder, the chart is there, visible and all normal functions are possible.

The unit has the most recent firmware. It’s 2012, v5.69, I know not that recent but it’s the latest for this now unsupported unit.

I discovered this issue when checking time / date on the mfd as I have also just realised that my raymarine gps has just gone over its rollover date and so isn’t showing correct date. It’s not been a good weekend.

Any thoughts on the chart invisibility? I know the gps antenna issue is only fixable by getting gps data from somewhere else or replacing the ray star 125.

Thanks
Dave

Have you done a factory re-boot?

Re: Raymarine E120 bizarre issue.

I haven’t done a factory reboot. Yet. My concern was that a reboot would take the firmware back to an old version. I don’t have access to a CF card of the correct size to be able to install an update. If it can be confirmed that a reboot will leave the most up-to- date firmware in place, then that would be a logical next step.

Anyone got any experience of rebooting a unit that was originally on non current firmware?

It can go way more bizar with this company. I had them claiming my unit was another brand, not theirs, because it said Raytheon instead of Raymarine

Anyway, expect nothing good from their service dept because they celebrate when units become unsupported and will drop you like a rock.

Do you have NMEA2000 or Seatalk NG (those are the same) or the old Seatalk HS or NMEA0183?

I recommend that if you buy new hardware, to buy up to date, modern hardware that is compatible with every brand, like this. Veratron Go Plus+ https://defender.com/assets/pdf/veratron/veratrongo.pdf

Yes, I’m not expecting anything from Raymarine, it’s old kit and not supported. The now defunct support site still pops up some useful sounding stuff in Google search results. I don’t understand a lot of it but that’s my lack of whatever.

Anyway. My E120, ST60+ and autohelm (yes, really) autopilot is on the original sea talk system with some nmea1830 (?) integration with the AIS and vhf.

Thanks for the link - will have a look. Although I’m really hoping to manage another few years without investing in a new electronics suite. Just done new paint, renewed coppercoat, renovated bowsprit and deck, upholstery and canvas. So feeling a bit skint (british for penniless)

Cheers, Dave

Yes, try to keep things going for as long as possible. But there is a solution for your situation and that is a product like this: https://www.yachtd.com/products/wifi_router.html

For $350 you can connect your Seatalk system, NMEA0183 etc. and you get wifi access to it all not just with their app but also navigation software etc. plus it provides a NMEA2000 port where you can connect a new device, like that GPS, and all the old equipment will work with it

Is there a way to select the chart source once you do the overlay screen? I know this caused me great pain in my new axiom+. So once you do the overlay you then need to confirm or select the chart source on the new plotter window.

There’s just the one source for charts - the CF card. It’s old 😀
