Raymarine C80 Chartplotter

While cruising along the AICW, my C80 chartplotter started to create problems. I would travel along - using "head up" motion- and suddenly my boat would show as moving sometimes sideways and sometimes backwards. After ~ 1/2 hour, it would show normal again (head up). This became disconcerting, especially around the "problem areas" of the AICW.
When we bought the sailboat 4 years ago, this problem happened 2 or 3 times and it stopped and behaved normally until this summer. Any thoughts or suggestions?

One of my friend had a similar problem and was caused by a bad connection of one wire in the fluxgate compass. We have redone the connections of those tiny wires and all is fine since. (1 year ago)

I suspect that Marc D is right; the problem is in the connections to your fluxgate compass. The chartplotter uses the fluxgate compass info to adjust the plot for heading up (or north up for that matter). Check the connections and your problem may go away.

We found that we had to box our fluxgate compass every couple of months to keep it calibrated; otherwise, we would experience symptoms similar to what you describe.

Also good to check the connections, of course.

My C80 lost its charts. It started with some "static" all over the screen as we were navigating. Turned it off till we got at our destination.

Turned it back on, Looked OK, but no charts loaded. All I got was what I guess is the default generic chart with no info at all. I tried two different SD chips and none got "read". I went through all settings, including "factory reset".
Am lost.
Time for a new one? Hoping I can put it on a belated Xmas list...

Not a great design on the chip slot cover. Depending where you are itcould have some crossion. Try some INOX or Eureaka Filmoil spray and retry the chip. Fixed mine.
