Re: Raymarine Axiom 7 - external GPS
Not familiar with RM either but I looked through the manual
Seems like turning on the GNSS sentences in proAIS to see where they output from the AIS700 would be a good first step. If it's through the seatalk, great. Use that and turn off the Axiom GPS
If it's only on the NMEA 0183 hook that up to the Axiom but only hook up the output from the AIS to the input of the Axiom. If the 0183 output of the Axiom is hooked up to the input on the AIS there will be a feedback loop. Select external GPS in the Axiom and that should do it

Raymarine Axiom 7 - external GPS
My Matsutec AIS produces GPS data that the Axiom doesnt successfully process. AIS data is ok. Since the RM MFD gives priority to networked GPS data, it tends to remain without a fix, even though its internal GPS is working.
That doesnt mean the RM is at fault for the AIS issue, but it does have an issue on camping out on a non decoded network device when internal GPS has good data. Yes, the “internal” GPS option is set.

Re: Raymarine Axiom 7 - external GPS
I have the Mat -33 manual. It allows a preset package for ais data, no obvious way to modify content.

Re: Raymarine Axiom 7 - external GPS
I see. The only option is to output AIS along with all the GPS data
You could run it through a multiplexer or bridge that allows you to turn off everything except VDO and VDM
Might try turning off all the nmea outputs on the MFD that aren't needed. Sometimes getting rid of the extra noise helps

Actually, it's a little more if you want the calibration tool, which I bought. Not strictly required, as you can do just as well by grabbing the unit and twisting it until the heading is right. Having an additional magnetic compass feeding the network is nice.

I'd have thought it'd be easier than all this. Assuming the AIS700 is already physically networked with the Axiom... I'd have thought all you'd have to do is go to the Axiom Data Sources/GPS menu, select AIS700, unselect internals, done deal.
Your AIS700 broadcast includes "own ship" location info, and I'd have expected your MFD could parse your location data from that.

No, the AIS700 unit does not show up as a GPS data source for the Axiom.

Axioms do not have an NMEA0183 input, unlike the earlier generations of RM MFDs.
I tried outputting the AIS700’s GPS signal via its NMEA0183 wires to a VHF and simply could not get it to work. For whatever reason, RM has not made that simple or even possible. The manual is worse than useless.

Re: Raymarine Axiom 7 - external GPS
Did you change the settings in proAIS to output the GPS data?

If you’re asking me, yes, of course. I worked on this for several days and spoke to several RM techs before finally giving up. I instead used a multiplexer to pull GPS data from our network (we already have an independent GPS seperate from the AIS unit) to send to our VHF.

Hmph. So much for that idea, then.
Seems strange to me, though... Would have expected RM thought of that as an obvious alternative to their internal GPS.

Re: Raymarine Axiom 7 - external GPS
another data point. With AIS running, RM MDF does correctly report Lat/Lon, and GPS time on the sat page. However, it is showing "NO FIX", and will not use the data. Same for a RM VHF on the same ng network. If the Ais is shut off, within a few minutes, both RM products successfully use the internal GPS fix from the MDF, as it transitions from network to internal.
perhaps GGA package "quality indicator" field from AIS is missing.

Re: Raymarine Axiom 7 - external GPS
Back to the original post, I spoke with Raymarine tech support today regarding my Axiom and we touched on the fix drop out. He seemed confident this was corrected in a recent software update and suggested I load the latest. It can't hurt to try before buying/installing new hardware.
