Raymarine AIS650 and ydnr 02

Hi,

I want to share over the WiFi the GPS and AIS data for my iPad so I can have all needed information in Navionics.

The boat has quite an old NMEA 0183 network with Raymarine AIS650, AIS splitter 100 and Raymarine E80.

I got also YDNR-02 which I want to use as wifi router.

What I understand I need to connect YDNR-02 as following:
RX1+ / RX1- → GPS
RX2+ / RX2- → AIS
TX+ / TX- → Not connected

Which lines should I connect from the PWR/Data cable which goes to AIS650?

Does it have both GPS and AIS data? I guess I need to first check in proAIS2 is it running on 4800 or 38400. Is it correct?

when talking about the physical connection, I would like to make it clean so I don't necessarily want to cut the cable and some wago's. Is there any cable tee for NMEA 0183 available ?

Re: Raymarine AIS650 and ydnr 02

For some stupid reason, Ray marine decided to not make GPS available, or at least not easily/consistently, from their AIS units. I guess it can work under certain situations, but mostly doesn't. If your does, then both AIS and GPS would be on the same pair of wires. For use with the IPAD, it might not matter if you can used the GPS in the iPad itself.

From your diagram, Blue (Out -) will connect to the RX- on the ydnr. Brown (Out +) will connect to RX+. It will be 38400, as AIS must always be at that speed.

Maybe I should then take the signal from Raymarine GPS Athena instead?
attached you can see how the wiring looks in my case (the one with splitter).

The AIS650 manual is consistent with what you say and OUT 38400 (Blue and Brown) should have both AIS and GPS.

I would only connect to the GPS if it doesn't work otherwise. If you do need that, the AIS would go to one input on the YDNR, and the GPS on the other.

Another possibility is to take NMEA0183 from your chart plotter. This would make any instruments (depth, wind etc) available on the ipad as well.

If you go back into the ProAIS software you used to configure the AIS650 transceiver, there is a section there where you can enable the output of GPS sentences on NMEA0183. In the case of the AIS650 it is capable of outputting GBS, GGA, GLL and RMC sentences.

We recommend disabling them because of the real potential for data conflicts or collisions if there are other GPS sources available onboard already, and those sources are already connected via NMEA 0183.

For example, your AIS650 is almost certainly networked to your E80 display using NMEA0183 at 38,400 Baud. Your E80 also probably has a SeaTalk GPS receiver connected through that connection. The E80 will prioritize SeaTalk over NMEA 0183 when GPS is available on both networks.

If there are other devices also downstream of the AIS transceiver, receiving NMEA0183 data, you'll want to make sure that they also have the ability to manage or prioritize their data sources if there are other sources for GPS available to them too.

I will keep that in mind if I ever work on a boat with a Raymarine AIS again. But it does seem detrimental to have it work this way. The 4800 NMEA output is probably not used for anything, except it is very useful to feed GPS to a VHF, which is what I was trying and failed to do. Such a basic use shouldn't be so difficult and discouraged to do.

You should not make broad assumptions like "Your E80 also probably has a SeaTalk GPS receiver connected through that connection." because in my experience they are wrong.
