The linear drive should be attached to the rudder arm not the steering wheel.
This is not my picture but it is a good representation. Google linear drive installations under images.

Edson marine or PYI Both make tillers for the rudder shaft.

You connect it to a tiller arm not to the radial drive. The radial drive is not designed for point loading a ram drive to... Tiller arms are custom ordered through PYI or Edson. I prefer the bronze Edson tiller arms myself and they have a pretty quick turnaround.

Re: Ray Marine EV200 w/linear drive install Niagara 35

We had our last tiller arm machined at a local shop. I paid about $200 for two (the second was cheap after the CAD file was made) out of aluminum.

Re: Ray Marine EV200 w/linear drive install Niagara 35

We installed an EV200 last year on our Shannon Shoalsailer - the linear drive attached to a tie rod connecting our dual rudders. Unfortunately, the advice from Raymarine Tech was conflicting and now have to purchase a new ACU 400 and Type 2 long linear drive.

If you can swing it, consider a Raymarine authorized installer. It seems that's the only way to get Raymarine's after sale help. On our own, we found Raymarine to be very unhelpful with advice or assistance in resolving our issue other than buying a new unit. Will be selling a EV200 and Type 1 linear drive as soon as our new autopilot is up and running.

The good news is that the EV200 worked great (except for the restriction on our turning radius) and we are very pleased with its features.

Thank you for your reply and info.Sorry to hear of the problem you had and probably what you most wanted to avoid in the first place.I hate when that happens and I am not joking.A one year old unit sounds interesting but my time frame is short ha ha isn't for everyone tho. Afterall you are still using it and I have some issues to work out on my plan. Thanks again

Before we cut them to install on the rudder shaft. Sure beat the heck out of the $450 for Edson's.

Re: Ray Marine EV200 w/linear drive install Niagara 35

That is very nice.Your design? How did you know of the proper dimensions? What about the way it fastens to the rudder post and how was it secured.Looks great tho.
Looking at it again it seams a cut and tooling still had to be done.Very nice tho.I will inquire in my area as to this option and I like the use of aluminum. No issues with the two different metals(ie rudder post and alloy arm ?
Thanks again

Re: Ray Marine EV200 w/linear drive install Niagara 35

Further to this thread.I am being told that I can save time(money) and have an easier install eliminating the arm from the rudder post by using the octopus RS drive system.http://octopusdrives.com/type-rs-drive.This would attach to my radial drive instead of the arm that attaches to the rudder post. Any help will be appreciated. Thanks

A separate tiller arm is best but if you don't have the space, etc. check this thread.

Re: Ray Marine EV200 w/linear drive install Niagara 35

Just got back from crawling under the steering column to check if the rudder post was keyed and found it was.Of course I took some pics but now I will have to return to measure the key size. The post is 2,375" but the key width will be challenging to get.
