Will the official version 2.0 be different than the pre-release version 2.0 which is available now.
And if so, how will it differ?

Yep, suspect the documentation might be one of the big ToDo's, he's been big on the need of a good manual.

But what has been done works very well.
I'am using now the not yet official Raspian 64 bits version, which is remarkable faster then 32 version. Running the V8 kernel instead of the V7.
Upgrading via the sources setting works also very good.
It is all works in progress.
For the communication SignalK is becoming the mainstay between the application and the hardware.
Here running with the input of NMEA2K via canbus adapter to SignalK and to OpenCPN.

Thanks.
I'm just in the beginner phase and still haven't hooked up any NMEA lines yet but will when the adapters arrive.
I'll have to investigate SignalK
And I know enough about OpenCPN to be dangerous.

So I'm wondering if the Pi3B I have lying about would be worth trying? and if so what software?

The weatherfax plugin for opencpn can decode ssb weatherfax.

Serial Devices as an usb GPS mouse or a transponder can be set and given an alias in the serial settings. Then there is an option to connect these to the SignalK server.
You put this also direct in SignalK but better is to do this via the serial settings.

Re: Raspberry Pi as Onboard Computer
Prompted by this thread, I replaced my pi 3b+ running openplotter 1.2 with a pi3b running the v2.0 beta on the weekend and am very impressed. I realised that the lack of kplex was actually not a showstopper as signalk does the same job (lack of diagnostics display aside), arguably, much more elegantly.
Being anal about power consumption I like the 3b for my application and was very pleased to note that performance on the pi3b seemed snappier than the pi3b+ running the older version of openplotter. As for being a beta, the impression I get is that the system will be able to inplace upgrade to the release version once this version becomes available. Can anyone confirm this?

Re: Raspberry Pi as Onboard Computer
So a 6' to 10' USB extender cable is no problem for one of these little computers...... to bring in NMEA Information from say an RS422 adapter?

Pretty sure that's correct - the settings app does all that for you >>

Re: Raspberry Pi as Onboard Computer
The usb spec is good for about 5m iirc. The rs422 adaptors require around 50mA supply current so this shouldn't be a limiting factor.

That "coming soon" was what made me suspect this will be the case, too. At the end of the day, it just needs to replace/ add files and make config changes as required, I guess.

Re: Raspberry Pi as Onboard Computer
No, i've used these for years. You don't need a driver or anything - Linux just detects a serial adapter. You will need to know what USB port it decided to use for the adapter, particularly if you have more than one thing plugged into your USB ports.
