Radar repair

i am looking at a boat that has a Raymarine Radar installed - actually the whole Raymarine package - but the radar doesn't work. Seller can't tell me much about why it doesn't work, but says that its all in place - just doesn't work. Any advice on a repair facility in the NY NY area? Want to get it fixed before i head off into the fog.

With the advancements in the electronics industry it often comes down to a repair or replace decision unless the equipment is new.

Re: Radar repair

What model? If it is really old there are no repair options though you may be able to find a used one. I had that problem and it was a simple swap for about $500. The newer digital ones could be repaired possibly.

Re: Radar repair

The minimum value that justifies repair keeps going up, and probably exceeds the vaule of the unit. In the meantime, "repair" is getting replaced by "replace" even under warranty. Do check to make sure that you are not dealing with a power or connection problem, which you can chase down yourself with a multimeter. If all the connections are good, and power is there, then you may best replace it.

An electronic device that is totally not working - dead - is actually better news than one that is partially functioning. The partial definitely needs repair, while the total stoppage may be a bad connection.

I had an interesting example of the repair/replace shift here a few weeks ago. Beautiful french door refrigerator, under warranty. The dealer chose to replace the whole thing, over $1,400 worth, rather than repair the ice maker....
