Got lots of ferries out here that move at 40 mph. If heading toward you from two miles away, it doesn't take more than three minutes to be on top of you, assuming you're stationary.

My radar is on a pole aft, about 8' above deck, and I don't regret the decision a bit. The pole has provided a home for my GPS antenna, AIS antenna, a dual-band ham radio antenna, and a wifi antenna. It also is the structure for an outboard motor lift.

The radar is easy to reach and a dead simple tilt adjustment for extended periods on one tack has been quite reliable and convenient.

In the meantime, there is plenty of stuff going up the mast to complicate pulling the mast without adding a huge persnickety multi-conductor cable.

G'day, mate. Ditto on Auspicious above. Ours is approximately 9 feet off the deck. The dinghy outboard lift on the pole has been priceless. I have a couple of removeable wire stays that we use offshore to add stability to the tower. All the best. Cheers.
