Radar, Furuno 1621

I was given a Furuno 1621 (no MkI or II indicated). It might be a '92 model.

Any comments on this unit would be appreciated.

Is there a means by which I can test it prior to installation?

I never turn down a gift and it would be good to know if the unit is worth installing. I know the range isn't what the more modern units are capable of but what can I expect for best performance? Can it be updated?

Kind regards,

JohnL

John, I have Furono 16 mile radar and am happy with it. I see you are trying to keep this thread active and I am on your side but am not techy enough to tell you how to bench test it. There is probably some reasone you can't just hook it to 12v and hoist the transiever 1/2 way up the mast on a halyard and see if you get signal. It's got to be way more complex than that or it wouldn't be any fun.

Aloha George,
Well, I was going to use a flagpole for a test because my mast isn't up just now.
If I don't get a techy reply soon I'll justs go ahead and put some 12v to it.
Thanks for the reply.
This unit is an 8 mile and I understand that has to do with the antennae size which is very small.
Regards, JohnL

JohnL,

Have one on my Cascade 44.... I installed it and IT always works. Mounted on a pole on the aft starboard side and ran the cable to the helm... remember I have an aft cockpit.

The only way I know how to test one without all the test platform is to set it on a pedastal so that it is above your head by a couple of feet, connect it up and turn it on. If you have an open area in one direction or another then you should be able to pick up some returns along the opening.

I think you can still get the manuals in PDF on the web from Furuno. It is a 16 mile radar but figuring the theoretical range of line of sight, 16 miles is plenty far.

I get a charge out of people that go for the longer range systems and mount them on their pleasure boat. Doesn't do much good. The newer ones have more electronics to them that can do a better job of radar resolution.

If you need I can probably get more info on the unit from my boat that is on the hard.

Aloha JJ,
Thanks for the offer but I've got the manuals and I think I'll just give a test hoisting it up a coconut tree or a flagpole near the water. This is a very early 1621 and the manual says 8mile max. 16 would be better but I know I'd need a new antennae to get 16 out of it if possible.
Thanks again,
Like to see photos of your Cascade when you get her ready to sell.

Roger wilco... soon as I get ready to sell there will be many pictures. Going to set up a website to sell her on.

Talk to you on the next thread.

there is no reason why you cannot bench test the radar, provided the scanner is secured adequately. If it will be on for more than a couple of minutes, make sure the scanner is at leat 3-4 ft away from you.
