Quark box with AIS and active splitter questions

Hi,
I have a few questions regarding my AIS system. I built a custom system (copied from another guy’s idea) on my IB30 using a Quarck Box with wifi and a Geomex active splitter. I have noticed that the range at which I pick up AIS signals can vary greatly, with no rhyme or reason. At times ships pop up miles away beyond all sorts of terrain, other times I won’t get a ping from a cargo ship until it’s a mile away. My VHF antenna is pretty old so I’m wondering if that is part of the problem, or is it something more fundamental? The equipment all seems to be working. I’m using Navionics to pick up the AIS overlays. Thanks!

Re: Quark box with AIS and active splitter questions

If you are not picking up a Class A AIS broadcast until it is a mile away, your system is SERIOUSLY deficient. Normally, this should be 20 miles MINIMUM, with 50 miles not unusual.

As for what is wrong, anything anybody can come up with is just a wild guess, but antenna and associated cables are a good place to start looking. Does your VHF work with this antenna?

Yeah, something is up.
I went messing around with the wiring tonight and I blew the fuse in the Glomex (I think) so now I get no signal at all. At least my VHF works..
