Proximity of Chartplotter to Compass

I am wanting to fit a Garmin 3006 to my boat, and I suddenly noted that the Installation instructions say that the minimum distance between the magnetic compass and the plotter should be 12".
My plotter would be about 2 " from the compass.
Is this a big deal, or could the compass compensation correct for this?

The flux field from the GPS will change based on things like backlighting etc....you will not be able to correct for having it too close.

I've installed a furno chartplotter/radar display closer to the magnetic compass than recommended and have noticed no variation in compass readings from having the display off or on. FWIW
