Angry Problem with st6002 Raymarine Autopilot

Hi all,
Can anyone shed any light on my auto pilot problem. It wonders downwind 40 to 60 degrees before correcting. It only seems to do this when under sail and does it regardless of sail setting. Is it a battery problem?? It used to do this jut occasionally, but now, all the time. Help......

I am thinking you have already adjusted the sensitivity settings and some of the other obvious things.

Make sure you are not on TRACK (steering the boat to maintain a track between two waypoints).

Not steering to the Wind, I assume.

Rudder Gain may be too low. Use AutoLearn, the calibration system..

Check all electrical connections if you haven't already done that.

pirate auto pilot problem

Thanks gentlemen,
I can confirm i have changed the sensitivity settings and am not locked on track. It turns down wind not up wind. i will check the gain question. My suspicion is the batteries might be on the blink and will check next time on board, after xmas.
The system was fitted 12 months ago.
Thinking back to the first time this problem happened, it was early this year while sailing from Wilson's Prom to Deal Is Bass Strait (Australia), the motor was off but the batteries were in slightly better condition than now. We sailed for 8 days with the problem only arising intermittently. But that may have been because there was a lot of motor sailing involved.
Thanks for your help. I will report back after checking batteries and gain and all electrical connections. (I forgot to mention, the AP is connected to the hydraulic stg system)

Are you using a VHF, HAM or SSB at the same time? That'll do it every time.

AP problem

Thanks for that suggestion. Another potential problem to watch out for. I was not using radio but its probable fridge was cycling on for some of the events when we went off course. Perhaps thats a contributor?

Not to be a toad here but you might get a lot more answers posting this in the Electronics and/or Navigation part of the forum.

Having only a shock cord stretched across my cockpit for a tiller tamer, I'm afraid I can't help you much

A distinct possibility.

Our 4000 autopilot had a similar problem where all of a sudden it would turn 30 degrees or so instantly, then slowly return to course.
It turned out to be bad circuit board connections on the four driver transistors. I soldered eight or nine bad connections out of twelve.
