pretty neat tablet: earl

Earl - Backcountry Survival Tablet

- waterproof
- android
- charges in 5 hours on its own solar cell
- e-ink display (super low batter)
- high sensitivity gps
- glove friendly screen

I can see that getting some serious mileage.

.. I like! Thanks for posting this.

This is where I wanted to see tablets go, especially for boat use - utilitarian, efficient and indestructible. Not all of earl's features will be of use to boaters, but with success, i can envision a larger model to follow, perhaps with more marine functionality.

Doesn't e-ink still have a lag with screen refresh? Do they have a working prototype yet? Looks like it would be great for simple boat work.

E-ink as been around forever on the Kindle. There's definitely a lag but depending on what you're doing it's negligible.

Now on my 4th e-ink device (newest Kindle Paperwhite), but can't imagine using it for anything that isn't a static screen. The pinch, zoom and swipe functions of Navionics charts, for example, would be pretty difficult with a delay in the screen, but I'm sure they have figured something out.

EInk is perfectly clear in sunlight. At some point the technology will be perfect for displays like charts. Probably not quite there in terms of size or resolution, photos on a kindle are ok if it would look good in high contrast blank and white but any color gradients convert to a blotchy image.
